Desperate vs Despondent

[desperate]:1)desperate라는 이 한 단어에 이 단락의 의미가 달렸습니다. 이런 장면을 볼 때마다 나는 이런 생각을 합니다. 2)영한사전이 독이 되는 현장을 나는 봅니다. 차라리 영어지도자는 (각급 학교 교사, 학원 강사, 번역자) 사전 보다는 차라리 영문 소설이나 신문이나 [타임]같은 잡지를 많이 읽는 게 어휘력을 넓히고 그리하여 단어의 정확한 용례를 익히는 게 중요하다는 생각을 합니다.


[절망이라는 말]:1)영어 단어 desperate에 “절망적인” 어쩌구 해설해 놓은 영한사전이 있는지 찾아보지 않았습니다. 물론, 그 단어의 뜻풀이는 잘못된 것입니다. 때로는 영어단어의 용례를 따라 풀이하지 않고 정말 안 된 말이지만 아직도 일본어로 된 영어사전을 그대로 배끼는 그런 사전 출판사들이 없는지 찾아볼 일입니다. 2)절망적이라는 형용사를 굳이 찾으라면 despondent가 딱 알맞은 단어입니다. 이 단어의 영어사전의 풀이는 sad and without hope이니 딱 “절망적”이라는 우리말에 맞지 않습니까?


[desperate]:1)desperate의 우리말 어의는 “필사적이다” “기를 쓴다”는 뜻입니다. 2)일주일을 굶어서 배가 고파서 죽을 지경인 (starving) 사람은 “필사적으로” 음식을 필요로 하겠죠. (He is in desperate need of meals.) 가뭄에 시달리는 주민들은 “기를 쓰고” 물을 구하겠죠. 두 번이나 대입시에 낙방한 수험생은 이번에는 “기어코” 붙으려고 하겠죠. 두 번이나 집권 기회를 잃은 정당은 세 번째는 집권 기회를 잡으려고 “안간힘을 쓰겠죠.” 이런 경우에 쓰는 단어가 바로 desperate 또는 desperately입니다.

[comments]::1)You run into a particular aspect of situation in which you are reminded of the necessity of concentration, a semblance of linguistic focal effort, that is. Focus of mind, or concentration is good, whereas stress is a psychological nuisance. Recklessness, wanting in common-sensical concentration required of a so-called translator, is tantamount to a deceit, I am afraid.


2)A mistaken notion of a protagonist's emotional state constitutes a mistranslation, of course. As you see, Protagonist Nora Acton is desperate. However, the translator says to his readers to the effect, "She is despondent."


3)I am real disappointed at the translator's near-empty warehouse of the vocabulary. The word desperate is an adjective indicating immediate and urgent need. When somebody is starving you can safely say that the person is in desperate need of meals. Nora Acton is described in the paragraph to be desperate.


4)What is she desperate about then? Or what is she desperate to do? As you must have noticed, she is desperate to open her mouth and speak something about her travails. However, Clara Banwell is restraining Nora not to speak.
