Don't Let Anyone Else Up, Without Calling Me First

"What time is it?"

"Just before midnight, sir"

"What day?" The fog in my brain wouldn't clear.

"Still Friday, sir. Excuse me, Dr. Younger, but you asked to be informed if Miss Acton had any visitors."

"Yes?"

"A Mrs. Banwell is on her way to Miss Acton's room now."

“무슨 요일인가요?” 안개가 뿌옇게 낀 듯 머리가 맑지 않았다.

“아직 금요일입니다. 깨워서 죄송합니다. 영거 박사님, 하지만 박사님께서 액튼 양에게 손님이 오면 알려달라고 부탁하셨기에....”

“네?”

“밴월 부인께서 지금 액튼 양의 방으로 가고 계십니다.”

“밴월 부인이요? 알겠습니다. 나한테 연락하기 전에는 다른 사람들을 깨우지 마세요.” (살인의 해석, 비채출판사)


[Don't let anyone else up, without calling me first]:1)역자는 이 문장을 “나한테 연락하기 전에는 다른 사람들을 깨우지 마세요.”라고 옮기고 있으나 오역입니다. 2)첫째는 말이 안되죠. 호텔에서 누구를 깨우든 전화하든 그건 호텔 프런트 데스크의 고유한 업무 영역이죠. 비록 소설이지만 소설 속의 주인공 I (닥터 영거)가 깨우라 또는 “깨우지 말라”고 할 성질이 아니죠.


[let anyone else up]:1)여기서 "let sb up"은 생략표현임을 알 수가 있습니다. 그리고 그 생략된 동사는 wake (wake up), come (come up), send (send up)등 정도라 하겠습니다. 2)따라서 여기서는 “let anyone else come up" (밴월 부인 말고는 그 누구도 액튼 양 방으로 올려보내지 마세요”에서 동사 come이 생략된 것으로 봅니다. 다시 말씀드리지만, 여기서는 그 누구를 깨워 수면을 방해하지 말라는 그런 부탁이 아니라 액튼 양 방으로 그 부모 또는 부모 중의 누군가가 올라가서 그 딸을 데려가거나 하는 일이 가장 걱정되는 일이기 때문에 영거 박사가 미리 알고 조치를 취하려고 하는 것입니다.


[A Mrs. Banwell=>else]:1)영어는 관계입니다. 번역가이든 학교의 영어교사이든 대학의 영문학과 교수이든지간에 영어지도자는 그 누구라도 영어를 “관계 속에서 그 의미를 파악하는” 기본자세가 되어 있어야 한다고 봅니다. 2)“벤월 부인이라는 부인=>벤월 부인이외의 누구”로 되는 것이죠. “다른 사람들” 운운으로 파악한 것부터가 잘못된 접근이죠.

Figuratively speaking, it is intricately interwoven with loops and knots of relationships which indicate, define and determine meanings and semantic implications in specific expressions. So, school teachers of the English language, college lecturers, or translators, by whichever titles you are called, should hold on to "the Staff of Relationships."


2)The translator has got it wrong. Utterly wrong. What has caused his misinterpretation anyway? The major reason is that he has lost the grip of the Staff of Relationships. The word 'else' is a substitutional element which is related to "A Mrs. Banwell." As a result, the Korean translator mistakenly says to the effect, "Never wake anybody up without calling me first."


3)The word 'else' is an adjective, but it is not a mere adjective. It is a substitutional adjective in this case. In other words, "a Mrs. Banwell" is substituted by else. So, when Dr, Younger, who is both a protagonist and narrator, says, "Don't let anyone else up, without calling me first," he means to say that he wants nobody except Mrs. Banwell to come up to Nora Acton's hotel room without his prior knowledge and permission.
