He knew all the best gentlemen's establishments. When asked, he invariably recommended the Players Club in Gramercy Park. With the Triumvirate, Jelliffe had never been asked. When, however, they invited him to join them at the Roman Gardens, Jelliffe sensed the occasion was propitious. As every man-about-town knew, upstairs at the Gardens were twenty-four luxuriously appointed bachelor's apartments, each of which contained a double-sized bed, separate bath, and a bottle of champagne on ice. [이런 걸 번역이라고 하나?]:이런 작업을 해놓고 이걸 “번역”이라고 하나요? 우선 역자는 이 단락의 의미를 그 절반도 이해하지 못했습니다. 그러니, 번역이 제대로 될 리가 없겠죠. 단적으로. 번역자 자신이 완전히 이해하지 못한 원전을 번역해서는 안된다고 나는 생각합니다.


[비유법 문장들];)비유법 문장은 제대로 옮기지 않았습니다. 우리말에 ‘두루뭉술’이란 말이 있는데요. 두루뭉술하게 옮겨놓은 우리말은 원전에 대한 배신이요 우리말에 대한 모독입니다.

[Players Club]:1)비록 고유명사라고는 해도 그 단체나 조직의 속성에 따라서 붙인 이름인 경우에는 그 속성을 따라서 옮겨야 합니다. 2)Players Club은 그야말로 “노는 자들의 클럽”니까 플레이어스 운운 음역하기 보다는 ‘한량구락부’까지는 아니라도 “플레이보이 클럽”정도로라도 옮겨야 원의를 살릴 수 있다고 봅니다. ‘플레이어스 클럽’이라고 번역된 번역서를 읽는 한국의 독자들을 생각해 보세요. 어느 것이 원의에 더 가까이 다가갈 수 있나 보세요.


[insufficiently collegial]:1)역자는 {{but on reflection this seemed insufficiently collegial.}}를 “다시 생각해 보니 대학생들의 놀이처럼 뭔가 부족해 보였다.”라고 옮기고 있으나 전혀 오역입니다. 2)“대학생들의 놀이처럼 뭔가 부족한” 것이 아니라 “대학생들처럼 하기에는 뭔가 부족한” 것이지요.


[insufficiently collegial]:1)사회적으로나 전문 분야에서 예컨대 뉴욕 지역의 신문에 자주 오르내릴 정도로 성공하고 있는 중년의 신사들인데 “대학생들”을 들먹이기에는 적절하지 않습니다. 2)여기에서의 collegial은 “with power shared equally between colleagues" (Encarta World English Dictionary, Bloomsbury), 즉 ”동호인의“ 정도의 의미이며 따라서 {{but on reflection this seemed insufficiently collegial}}은 ”다시 생각해 보니 동호인 성격에는 뭔가 부족한 듯 했다“와 같이 번역하는 게 옳습니다. 3)좀더 부연한다면 ”공유한다“는 의미를 새겨보세요. 언외의 함의이지만 대개는 이런 클럽은 추문이나 반윤리적 행위나 심지어 범죄까지도 공유하는 것입니다. 그리고 이들에게는 이른바 ”공범자 인식“이 존재하는 것이지요.

[comments]::1)This kind of version work couldn't deserve the designation of translation, let alone correct interpretation, could it? This semblance of bilingual transcription called translation is a total mess full of deceits, neglects and ignorance.


2)The semantic implications contained in the figure of speech hasn't been thoroughly sought out. The writer of the novel is also too circumspect about them. In other words, he is beating about the bush. But the real story is about the mode of life of high society players, playboys, that is.


3)Metaphors abound in the author's round-about way of speech. He writes that Protagonist Jelliffe "had cemented his social and professional connections with such mortar." What did he mean by such mortar? You know that the word 'girls' makes a conversion into "such mortar." However, the Korean translator is prevaricating on the conversion.


4)Let's make some more efforts to discover conversion discourses. The conversion of players into "every man-about-town" is the one. In other words, the word 'players' is substituted for the phrase "every man-about-town."


5)What do they play, then? The gentlemen play with girls. In a very deviant and pervert way. Protagonist Jelliffe initially thinks "four girls and four rooms," which can be interpreted that he is thinking of the assembly of four girls with four men but he has second thoughts.


6)Why? Because he thinks that four girls with four men is "insufficiently collegial." To elaborate, the assembly is wide of the mark that guarantees collegiality among members. What is meant by collegiality anyway? "The word collegiality can connote respect for another's commitment to the common purpose and ability to work toward it." (The Wikipedia) In short, the word collegiality indicates the state in which members feel stronger sense of belonging, trust of each other, and more reliance on each other.


7)What is thought out by the protagonist in the novel to enhance collegiality, then? The author only mentions "two of each," which makes bilingual communication worse by his prevarication. That looks in a way or another like a riddle, doesn't it? Anyhow we have to crack the riddle. Do you interpret the expression as "two girls for each man," which the Korean translator has done and which has turned out ludicrously ridiculous. Which would indicate superfluity, then, don't you think? To share the power and enjoy the sense of mutual belonging you'll have to reduce the number of the girls participating in the 'play,' and elevate the concentration of participation.


8)As in almost other complicated cases, the ignorant reviewer asked www.google.com and thought over search results. Visits and revisits were made and identical queries were put into it. Eventually I ran into this welcome search result. Here it goes:"February 02, 2005

9)As a natural result, I've come to reach a destination in which the original writer hints at a promiscuous sexual binge experimented in the high society circles at the time of 1909. This reviewer has seen the sexual perversions mentioned in the Western literary works and heard the similar events reactivated in certain circles of the high Korean society. The answer to the riddle should have been:"two girls and two rooms." Why? Because the objects of the determiner each that fingers to factors for the consideration to be taken is girls and rooms. The factors are two, so "two of each" here means two girls and two rooms.
