You're Not Allowed to Prune Nor to Truncate!

[원문]:In 1909, the guests at a fashionable American dinner made a pairwise procession when called to table, every woman escorted on the arm of a man. Mrs. Banwell was not on Freud's arm. She had lightly dropped her fingers on Younger's wrist at the decisive moment, but still she managed to address herself to Freud, while capturing the attention of the entire party as she did so. [한 단락을 싹둑 잘라버린 그 무모함]:이 단락 앞에 6개 문장 12줄 한 단락 전부를 무 자르듯이 싹둑 잘라버렸네요. 번역자가 이래서 되는 건지. 그 무모. 잔혹. 자의성 (제멋대로 함)에 어안이 벙벙하네요.


[escort]:1)escort란 말 문명국가 사회에서는 관행적으로 “남자가 여자를 특정 장소로 안내하는” 일을 일컫는 말이지요. 그런데 여기서는 “여자가 남자의 팔짱을 끼고” 운운하고 있군요.


[every woman escorted on the arm of a man]:1)구문론상으로도 “여자는 남자의 팡에 에스코트되어”라고 되어 있지 않나요? 2)이 구문을 완전 문장으로 풀어 쓰면 “every woman was escorted on the arm of a man”로 되기 때문이죠.


[정역]:1909년 당시 유행했던 만찬 식사에 온 손님들은 식탁으로 초대될 때 쌍쌍이 입장하는 게 관례였는데, 여자들이 남자들의 팔에 이끌리어 입장하도록 되어 있었다. 밴월 부인이 프로이트의 팔짱을 낀 건 아니었다. 그녀는 결정의 순간이 오자 영거의 손목에 가볍게 손가락을 댔다. 그러면서도 클라라 밴월은 여전히 프로이트와 인사를 나누고 있어서 전체 손님들의 시선을 끄는 것이었다.


[comments]::1)The translator is not allowed to prune parts of the original text. Which is regarded as a common sense. The Korean translator has ignored the very common sense. He has gone so far as to truncate the whole paragraph with six sentences and 12 lines, prior to this one. I am stupefied at his recklessness and arbitrariness.


2)The name of a meal in a party should be specified, of course. A dinner is a late evening meal. In the Korean version the meal is not specified. The mode of procession in this novel by pairs is described as escort. The translator has misconstrued the phrase {{every woman escorted on the arm of a man}}to mean to the effect that "every woman escorted her company by the arm."


3)The behavior of escorting somebody doesn't have to be done by a man only. However, there is described in the paragraph that {{every woman escorted on the arm of a man}}, which denotes that the statement can be syntactically rewritten as "every woman was escorted on the arm of a man," which implies that every man had guided their woman by the arm to the table.
