The Hierarchy=>The Top Management=>It

[원문]:A few years ago, as we all remember, there was a great deal of talk about the "end of hierarchy." We would all be one big happy crew, sailing together on the same ship. Well, it hasn't happened and it isn't about to happen, for one simple reason: When the ship is going down, you don't call a caucus--you give a command. There has to be somebody who says, "Enough dithering--this is it." Without a decision maker, you'll never make a decision. Moreover, as our corporate institutions become increasingly complex--technologically, economically, and socially--the more we need to know just who the ultimate authority is. [hierarchy]:1)이 단어를 “계층구조”라고 욺기고 있는데요. 너무 추상적이고 막연하지 않나요? 이 단어가 결국 이 단락 마지막 문장의 top management가 아닌가요? the end of hierarchy 따라서 이 부분은 “최고 경영진의 종말”이라고 옮기면 그 의미가 확실하지 않나요?


[주제를 모르시는군요]:1)단락의 해석에는 그 단락의 주제, 즉 소주제 (topic idea)를 아는 게 중요하죠. 2) 이 단락의 소주제는 “최고경영진의 존재 필요성”이죠. 즉, 조직의 권위주의를 청산합네 하고 최고경영진을 없애면 결국은 위기에 진로를 결정할 사람이 없어서 큰 혼란에 빠진다는 거죠.


[We would all be one big happy crew, sailing together on the same ship.]:1) 이 문장이 talk about the end of hierarchy가 가정법 문장의 조건절 (protasis)이 되고, 바로 이 문장이 그 귀결절 (apodosis)이 되는 걸 아는 게 문장 해석의 요체죠. 2)따라서, 이 부분은 “그렇게 최고 지휘부가 다 없어졌다면...”이라고 옮기는 게 독자들의 원만한 이해를 위해서 좋은 일입니다.


["Enough dithering--this is it."]:1) 이 부분을 역자는 ““당황할 것 없어요. 이렇게 합시다””운운하고 있는데요. 완전한 창작이죠. 그저 이 부분의 의미를 넘겨짚어서 대충 그렇게 본 것인데요. 2) 이 부분의 옳은 번역은 “왈가왈부는 이제 충분합니다. 이걸로 됐습니다.”라며 아무런 실질적 결정없이 논의만 지루하게 계속되는 상태를 끝내면서 하는 말이죠. 그런면에서 Enough dithering=this is it의 관계가 되고요. 둘 다 같은 의미의 말을 반복함으로써 강조하는데 지나지 않죠. 그리고 물론 This is it는 That's it의 변형일 뿐이죠. (The expression [this is it] is a syntactic modification to the other expression [That's it], which is identical in meaning.)


[I want to focus on the new demands facing it.]:1)역자는 이 부분을 “조직이 당면한 새로운 필요에 대해 초점을 맞추어보려 한다”라고 하고 있는데요. 아니죠. 그런 말 하면 “헛소리”죠. 2)the top management=>it가 안 보이세요, 번역자님? 따라서, 이 부부은 “최고 경영자가 당면한 새로운 요구 사항들...”이라고 옮겨야 하죠.


[정역]:우리 모두 기억하고 있는 바와 같이 수년 전 “최고 계층의 종언”에 대해서 말이 많았다. (그렇게 최고 계층이 없어져 버렸더라면) 우리 모두 같은 배를 타고 함께 항해하는 행복한 선원들이 되었을 것이다. 그런데 그런 일은 일어나지도 않았고 또 앞으로 일어날 것 같지도 않은 것은 단 한 가지 간단한 이유 때문이다. 배가 침몰하고 있는 경우 우리는 회의를 소집하지는 않는다. 우리는 명령을 내린다. 누군가 “더 이상 왈가왈부 지체할 수 없어요. 이제 왈가왈부는 이걸로 끝이에요,”라고 말하는 사람이 있어야 한다. 의사결정자가 없으면 우리는 결정을 할 수가 없다. 더구나 기업 조직이 과학기술적으로 경제적으로 그리고 사회적으로 점점 더 복잡해질수록 구성원들은 누가 최고의 권한을 갖고 있는지 알아야 할 필요성이 더욱더 커진다. 따라서 최고경영자의 소멸이나 권한 약화에 대해 논의하는 대신에 최고 경영자가 당면한 새로운 요구 사항들에 나는 초점을 맞추어보려 한다.


[comments]::1)I am here tempted to say one more time that the translator should get his or her version messages across to his or her readers, and that the translator should not transcribe lexical definitions verbatim. The translator should have clarified what the author means by "the end of hierarchy." The crust of the interpretation lies in the realization that the word hierarchy is synonymous with the phrase {{top management.}}


2)One of the prominent attributes of the modern English prose is that it is rich with ellipses. An apodosis statement (the conclusive statement of the subjunctive mood past perfect) is one example of such elliptical expressions. Thus, the statement {{We would all be one big happy crew, sailing together on the same ship,}} can be rewritten (or paraphrased) as: (If there had happened the end of hierarchy) {{We would all be one big happy crew, sailing together on the same ship.}}


3)Equivocation is no translation. The translator has got it wrong by equivocating on the statement {{"Enough dithering--this is it"}} to the effect that "Don't be perplexed. Let's do like this!" The statement {{"Enough ditherin}} is not an expression of an urge to act but one of displeasure toward delays caused by wrangling. Although the statement {{this is it}} is described as an expression of wishes or expectation. (Something is going to happen: Longman Dictionary) I disagree to that definition and the Google search hadn't been of any help but I think that the statement {{this is it}} turns out to be a new twist to the cliche {{That's it!}} but that it is identical in semantic implications. (All the dithering is finished!)


4)The translator has mistaken the latter half of the last sentence of the paragraph {{I want to focus on the new demands facing it.}} to mean to the effect that "I want to focus on the new necessities of the organization." The translator is mistaken. The pronoun it stands for the noun phrase {{the top management,}} so it should have been translated to the effect:"I want to focus on the new requirements asked of the top management." In short, the paragraph at issue mentions the importance of the top management. The key words are the hierarchy and the top management. (the hierarchy=>the top management=>it)
